First up is Bueda, a CMU spinout headed up by Vasco Pedro. The idea behind Bueda is to better monetize ads on user-generated content (UGC) sites using tags and tighter semantic matching.
Certainly a very large market, but also quite crowded, and one that hasn’t necessarily delivered the technology promise as much as the hype. Vasco did a great job outlining how Bueda is going to use the most relevant large semantic libraries to do a better job matching ads to UCG sites.
I think their approach to the market is the right one – in phase one of their launch plan, they get a slice of the ad revenue in a “skin-in-the-game” fashion, later doing licenscing deals once they prove the effectiveness of their technology.
Vasco is a very competent and compelling entrepreneur – this is a solid start for the day, and a strong second class for AlphLab.

Good explanation of Bueda. I’m surprised you were able to explain it without using the word ontology since we must have used it at least a dozen times in our interview with Vasco (http://startuppittsburgh.com/2009/04/bueda-interview/).
Vasco did a great job in his presentation – only one ONTOLOGY, by my count…
